The Last of Us Episode 5 Recap: What Happened
Joel and Ellie team up with Henry and Sam to escape the city through underground tunnels. They are cornered by Kathleen's forces, but a massive infected horde erupts from the earth, causing a massacre.
The Horde Eruption
As Kathleen's militia corners the group in a suburban cul-de-sac, a massive sinkhole opens, releasing hundreds of infected, including a terrifying Bloater. The ensuing chaos is a bloodbath that wipes out the rebel army. Joel provides sniper cover while Ellie, Henry, and Sam manage to scramble to safety in the most intense action sequence of the season.
A Tragic Morning
The group's relief is short-lived when Sam reveals to Ellie that he has been bitten during the fight. Ellie tries to use her blood to save him, but the fungus is too fast. The next morning, Henry is forced to shoot his own brother after he turns, before turning the gun on himself in a moment of absolute despair.
